Frontiers of Engineering
Reports on Leading-Edge Engineering
This volume presents papers on the topics covered at the National Academy of Engineering’s 2016 US Frontiers of Engineering Symposium. Every year the symposium brings together 100 outstanding young leaders in engineering to share their cutting-edge research and innovations in selected areas. The 2016 symposium was held September 19-21 at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center in Irvine, California. The intent of this book is to convey the excitement of this unique meeting and to highlight innovative developments in engineering research and technical work.
Building Information Modeling
by Yusuf Arayici
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is often misinterpreted by practitioners and researchers as REVIT or ArchiCAD since these tools are introduced as BIM by the software vendors. Yet, BIM is much more than a software tool. It is actually more about process and people than it is about technology. The e-book provides a detailed and complete perception for BIM to conceive it correctly by practitioners and researchers. It covers technology, process and people aspects through a lifecycle perspective. It also gives examples of BIM projects for the readers to perceive BIM benefits from its use.

Pathways to Urban Sustainability
Challenges and Opportunities for the United States
Cities have experienced an unprecedented rate of growth in the last decade. More than half the world’s population lives in urban areas, with the U.S. percentage at 80 percent. Cities have captured more than 80 percent of the globe’s economic activity and offered social mobility and economic prosperity to millions by clustering creative, innovative, and educated individuals and organizations. Clustering populations, however, can compound both positive and negative conditions, with many modern urban areas experiencing growing inequality, debility, and environmental degradation.
Data Visualization Methods for Transportation Agencies
Data Visualization Methods for Transportation Agencies provides techniques for planners who have various levels of experience with displaying and reporting information in a visual format. The publication includes practices for developing visualization skills, enhancing transportation analysis, and improving public engagement.
Grand Challenges for Engineering
Imperatives, Prospects, and Priorities
Engineering has long gravitated toward great human ambitions: navigation of the oceans, travel to the moon and back, Earth exploration, national security, industrial and agricultural revolutions, communications, and transportation. Some ambitions have been realized, some remain unfulfilled, and some are yet to be determined.
CAD-CAM & Rapid prototyping Application Evaluation
by Miltiadis A. Boboulos, Ph.D.
For engineering design and drafting CAD-CAM is the most wonderful innovation. Computerized drawing is vastly utilized for machine design, microelectronics, robotics or any other field of engineering. The system is used for manufacturing, Design, Evaluation & Management, Model Processing, Rapid Prototyping etc. In this book, some basic software for design is discussed like Autodesk, AutoCAD, Solid works 2010 for modern manufacturing. The author describes via review, analysis and case studies the process in the selection, application and implementation of such systems. At the end of the chapters, the book describes the applications of Rapid Prototyping, Stereolithography, Paper Lamination Technology, Electroset Technology, Process Evaluation etc. This book also described the cost structure along with strengths & limitations of materials.
